New Federal Minimum Wage Starts at $9.50 Per Hour

The new plan raises the federal base wage to $15 an hour by the year 2030. The first step already began, and many low-income workers are now earning a higher hourly pay. Starting in November 2025, the pay went up from $7.25 to $9.50 per hour. This is the first federal raise since 2009, and it affects about 27 million workers across the country.

This change gives a full-time worker more than $2,000 extra every year. For many families, this makes a big difference because they went years without any increase at all

What is the variation of the new minimum wage in the United States?

The following is a summary of changes to the US federal minimum wage, highlighting the rate increase that took effect in November 2025 and long-term targets.

Stimulus Payments in December 2025: Only Two States Sending Payments in December

Category / Previous federal rate / New federal rate / Target for 2030

  • General workers / $7.25/hour / $9.50/hour / $15/hour
  • Tipped workers / $2.13/hour / $5.50/hour / To be determined (TBD)
  • Youth training wage / $4.25/hour / $8.00/hour / $10/hour

Bigger Pay Boost for Tipped Workers

The law also gives a stronger boost to workers who depend on tips. Earlier, tipped workers only received $2.13 per hour from their employers.

Now the new base pay is $5.50 per hour. Employers will still use tips to reach the main federal minimum of $9.50 an hour, but the higher base amount will make income more steady for people who work in restaurants, bars, and hotels.
