VA Compensation Rates Increase: Will VA Disability benefits increase?

Veterans advocacy groups urge Congress to modernize the 'individual unemployability' program, providing tax-free monthly benefits to disabled veterans unable to work.

VA Compensation Rates Increase: Veterans advocacy groups are pressuring Congress to modernize the “individual unemployability” program, which offers tax-free monthly benefits to disabled veterans who do not have a 100% disability rating but are nevertheless unable to work.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Michael Figlioli, director of the National Veterans Service, emphasized the importance of providing all-encompassing assistance to returning veterans. “The return of veterans from war altered them. To live and prosper, they require resources. The least we can do is make sure they can survive,” Figlioli said, according to Marca.

Relatives contend that the program needs a comprehensive makeover because it hasn’t seen any major modifications since the 1940s. They demand that eligibility requirements and pay scales be changed to better serve the needs of today’s veterans.

Veterans can currently qualify for full VA disability compensation under the program if they can demonstrate a five-year work history where illnesses and injuries related to their service have affected their ability to work. Nevertheless, a lot of program supporters believe the $3,800 monthly benefit to be insufficient.

The program provided benefits to over 377,000 veterans in fiscal year 2024, totalling $7 billion in monthly payments and other benefits.

The VA’s deputy undersecretary for policy and oversight, Ron Burke, emphasized that veterans who are unable to work but do not meet the 100% disability rating threshold are eligible for full disability compensation under the program. To be eligible, veterans must demonstrate a disability of at least 60% for one condition or 70% for multiple conditions.

Will VA Compensation Rates increase?

It has been said that the antiquated eligibility requirements and payout schedules do not sufficiently assist veterans with disabilities related to their military service. Supporters are pleading with Congress to address these problems to ensure that the program adequately meets the needs of veterans. “The least we can do is ensure their survivability,” Figlioli emphasized. Legislators must accept the sacrifices made by veterans and take action to modernize and improve the “individual unemployability” program.
