VA Disability Claim Status: For veterans, the VA Claim Status Tool on VA.gov is very helpful because it makes it easy to see how claims, decision reviews, or appeals are going.

Veterans can check on the status of their claims from anywhere with this tool—they don’t have to go to an office or call the VA’s help center. This ease-of-use speeds up the process and makes waiting for updates less frustrating, so veterans can stay up to date on their claims and benefits with little work.

VA Disability Claim Status: Types of Claim

The VA Claim Status Tool allows veterans to verify a range of claims pertaining to their benefits.

This comprises:

  • Disability Compensation: You can easily track these claims, whether they are for specific needs like an automobile or clothing allowance, or for physical or mental health conditions related to your service.
  • Pension Benefits for Veterans or Survivors: The tool provides you with the most recent information if you’re applying for or reviewing pension benefits.
  • Special Monthly Compensation: This covers benefits such as Attendance and Aid, which are given to people who require more care because of conditions related to their service.
  • Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC): Survivors can follow claims for monetary compensation under DIC.
  • Burial Allowance: The tool can also be used by veterans and their families to verify claims for burial expenses.
  • Grants for Special Housing: You can check the status of your application for Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) or Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grants with just a click.

Other Requests You Can Track

The tool lets you verify the status of specific requests in addition to claims, like:

  • Adding or Removing Dependents: You can monitor these requests online if you need to make changes to your dependent status.
  • Dependent Children’s School Attendance Approval: This tool will assist you in tracking the status of your application for a dependent child’s school attendance approval.
  • Reviews of decisions and appeals

The Claim Status Tool also covers you if you’re going through an appeal or decision review process.

You are able to track the status of your review or appeal and learn about any further documentation that the VA may need.

How to Use the Tool for Claim Status Access

You must sign in using one of these free accounts in order to access the VA Claim Status Tool:

  • Login.gov
  • ID.me
  • DS Logon (used for eBenefits and milConnect)
  • My HealtheVet (Premium account)

Once you log in, you’ll see a list of all the appeals, decision reviews, and claims that are still open.

If you click on one of these, you can see more specific information about your case, like where it is in the eight-step process for filing a disability claim, the proof that has been given, and any other paperwork that it may need.

You can download decision letters for certain types of claims, reviews, or appeals. You can also upload documents to support your first claim and check on the status of your claim at any time. Keep in mind that papers sent by fax, mail, or in person might not appear in the online system.

VA promises that your personal information will be safe while you use this tool, but you should also be careful with any files you download or print from the internet. You can call the VA at 800-827-1000 (TTY: 711) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET if you need more help or have any questions.
