VA Education Benefits: VA education programs like the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill can help veterans a lot, but they only last for a certain amount of time. Whether you want to go to college, get technical training, or do an apprenticeship, you need to know how long you have to use them. Extensions may be given in some cases, though, if life throws you a curveball.
When the Post-9/11 GI Bill ends depends on when you left the military. There are 15 years from the date of separation to the date of claim if you separated before January 1, 2013. Your benefits will never end if you were released on or after that date.
If you are using the Montgomery GI Bill, on the other hand, your benefits end ten years after you leave the service. There are times when you might be able to get an extension if the deadline comes and goes and you haven’t been able to fully use your benefits.

For example, you could get an extension if you served longer in the military after you first applied for benefits. Because you want to be eligible, you must have served for at least 99 days straight. If this is the case, you will need to send the VA a request along with proof, like a copy of your DD214 discharge papers or your orders to be on active duty.
If illness or disability prevented you from attending school, you may qualify for an extension of your VA education benefits. To apply, you’ll need detailed documentation, including a letter stating the nature of your illness, how long you missed school, and a note from your physician explaining your diagnosis, treatment, and how long the illness impacted your ability to study.
Extensions are also available if you were detained by a foreign government after your last release from active duty. You must provide the exact dates of this detainment.
Though VA benefits do expire, these extensions offer flexibility, ensuring veterans can still access vital educational support. Reach out to the VA or your Regional Processing Office for more information if you believe you qualify.
