VA Health Care Benefits Eligibility: Who is and who isn’t eligible to get VA health care benefits?

VA health care benefits now cover millions of veterans exposed to poisons during combat zones post 9/11. Eligibility depends on basic service and discharge criteria, 24 continuous months, and non-dishonorable discharge.

VA Health Care Benefits Eligibility: Are you a veteran unsure about your eligibility for VA health care benefits? The good news is that VA health care now covers millions of veterans who were exposed to poisons and other hazards while serving our nation.

This covers people who fought in the Vietnam War, Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, or any other combat zone following 9/11. You might be qualified for VA health care if your basic service and discharge criteria meet each other.

“If you served in the active military, naval, or air service and didn’t get a dishonourable discharge, you may be eligible for VA health care benefits,” the official VA website says.

Unless specific restrictions apply, you also must have served 24 continuous months or the whole term for which you were summoned to active service, whether you enlisted after September 7, 1980, or entered active duty after October 16, 1981.

Is VA Disability for Life? Here’s How Long VA Benefits Last

The minimum duty standard could not apply in cases of hardship or “early out,” dismissal due to a disability resulting from or made worse by your active-duty service, or if you served before September 7, 1980.

Regardless of whether you are currently serving in the Reserves or the National Guard or not, you must have received a federal order calling you to active duty and have completed the entire period of service. You are not eligible for VA health care if you have active-duty status for training purposes alone.

VA Health Care Benefits Eligibility

VA health treatment is also available to veterans who served in specific areas and during specific times throughout the Vietnam War era. The same holds should you satisfy the basic service and discharge criteria and come across toxins or other hazards either serving our nation at home or overseas.

Chapter 30 VA Benefits Eligibility: How to Qualify for Benefits

You are qualified for VA health care if you are a veteran who satisfies the basic service and discharge criteria and has experienced toxins or other hazards while serving our nation.

“All Veterans who meet basic service and discharge requirements and who were exposed to toxins and other hazards while serving our country-at home or abroad-are now eligible for VA health care.”  the official VA website says. Thus, if this describes you, do not hesitate to apply right now.
