VA Disability payment in December: Veterans who get monthly disability money from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will receive their November payment one day later than usual. Because November 30 falls on a weekend this year, the VA will send the deposit on December 1 instead.

Millions Depend on these Monthly Payments

Around 6.5 million veterans were getting disability compensation in 2024. This money is tax-free and goes to veterans who became sick or injured during active duty or whose health problems got worse because of their service. Some family members can also receive help, including surviving spouses, children, and sometimes parents.

The ongoing federal shutdown that started on October 1 has made many people nervous, but the VA has said the money will continue. A VA spokesperson told Newsweek that “VA benefits will continue to be processed and delivered, including compensation, pension, education, and housing benefits.” This gives relief to veterans who need this income for rent, medicine, food, or daily living.

How the VA Decides Payment Amounts?

Veterans receive different payment amounts based on their disability rating and family situation. When someone has more than one service-connected condition, the VA uses a special formula that combines the ratings instead of adding them.

In 2025, a veteran with a 10% disability rating gets $175.51 each month. A 20% rating pays $346.95. The highest base payment is $4,544.23. That amount is only for a veteran who has a 100% rating and also has a spouse, one child, and two dependent parents. These payments help many households manage medical costs and cover basic needs.

What Conditions Qualify for VA Disability?

The VA reviews many types of health problems when deciding if a veteran qualifies. Physical issues like back pain, lung diseases, hearing loss, mobility limits, scars, ulcers, and cancers linked to toxic exposure can count as service-connected disabilities.

Mental health conditions also qualify. Many veterans receive compensation for anxiety, depression, PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, and conditions related to military sexual trauma. These issues can also lead to high disability ratings depending on how serious they are.

The VA usually sends the previous month’s benefit on the first business day of the new month. Since the last day of November is on a weekend this year, the deposit will show up on December 1. Some banks may show the money earlier, but veterans are encouraged to plan for the December 1 date to avoid problems.
