VA’s sign-in changes for 2025: The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is making significant updates to its online login process, aiming to improve both ease of use and security. By 2025, Veterans, beneficiaries, and caregivers will be required to sign in to services like VA.gov, the VA Health and Benefits mobile app, and others using Login.gov or ID.me.
This means that older login methods, such as My HealtheVet usernames and passwords, will no longer be valid after January 31, 2025. DS Logon credentials will be phased out by September 30, 2025.
The VA says this change is based on feedback from Veterans who expressed a desire for fewer login options. By combining account access into one simple system, the VA aims to make it easier for users to access their benefits and services securely.
How Does a VA Rater Make a Decision? Important details
Security is a key focus of the update. With the rise of identity theft and fraud, protecting sensitive information has become more important than ever. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported over one million identity theft cases in 2023, with Veterans and military retirees losing an estimated $350 million to fraud. To prevent such incidents, both Login.gov and ID.me require identity verification and multifactor authentication (MFA) to keep personal data safe.
Setting up an account is simple and only takes about 10 minutes. Veterans can visit www.va.gov/sign-in-changes to create their Login.gov or ID.me accounts. Those who already use these platforms don’t need to do anything, but others who still use My HealtheVet or DS Logon should make the switch as soon as possible. Transitioning early will give them time to get familiar with the new system before the deadlines.
For those who need help, VA facilities are ready to assist. Veterans can bring a government-issued photo ID and any necessary documents, and staff will guide them through the process. The VA also provides step-by-step guides, video tutorials, and downloadable fact sheets to make the transition as easy as possible.

While these changes only affect account-based services, many VA resources, such as downloading forms, finding locations, or exploring benefits, can still be accessed without signing in. However, having a verified account ensures uninterrupted access to managing health care and benefits online.
