What is the Social Security Death Index and Who Can Access the Information?

The Social Security Administration maintains the SSD, a database containing information on deaths and individuals who were issued a Social Security Number.

Social Security Death Index: The Social Security Death Index (SSDI) is a database maintained by the Social Security Administration (SSA) that contains information about individuals who have passed away and were issued a Social Security Number (SSN). This registry was created in 1962, and it includes data on deaths reported to the SSA.

What Information is Included in the SSDI?

The SSDI contains essential details about deceased individuals, such as:

  • Full Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Date of Death
  • State or Territory where the SSN was issued
  • Place of Residence at the time of death

These records are made available to the public only after three years from the person’s date of death.

Who Can Access the SSDI?

The Social Security Death Index is not open to the general public. The SSA shares this information only with federal and state agencies through agreements designed to exchange data for official purposes. These agencies use the information to carry out functions related to Social Security benefits and other government programs.

While the SSDI itself is not widely available, a version known as the Death Master File is provided by the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) under the Department of Commerce. The Death Master File contains a broader set of death records, but it excludes state-specific details. Certain private organizations, like banks and credit institutions, can purchase access to this file.

Why is the SSDI Important?

The collection and management of SSDI data is crucial for the effective functioning of SSA programs, such as distributing Social Security benefits. The data helps to prevent fraud and ensures that payments are made correctly.

The confidentiality of the information is a priority. The SSA works to protect the privacy of beneficiaries and maintain the security of their personal information. This is to ensure that the rights of those listed in the database are safeguarded.
