Verstappen set about establishing an early lead in his Red Bull while the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz attempted to keep up.
F1 Results: Max Verstappen won the race at the Red Bull Ring after enduring a strategic battle with the Ferrari drivers.
Verstappen set about establishing an early lead in his Red Bull while the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz attempted to keep up – the Spaniard appearing to have more initial speed than his teammate, but being unable to pass.
A Virtual Safety Car was deployed to cover Nico Hulkenberg’s retirement when the Haas ran out of fuel at Turn 4, and the Ferraris elected to pit for new tyres due to the sluggish pace.
Verstappen chose not to pit, and when he did, he lost his position to both Ferraris. Before pursuing the leader Leclerc and regaining the lead, he swiftly caught up to Sainz and reclaimed second place.
From there, he amassed a 24-second advantage by Lap 69, pitting for new tyres and the quickest lap award after completing the race with a time of 1:07.012.
Leclerc finished in a comfortable second position, while Sergio Perez prevailed over Carlos Sainz to take the final podium spot.
Several drivers received five-second penalties for exceeding track limits, which was the day’s hottest topic. These included seventh-place finisher Lewis Hamilton and eighth-place finisher Carlos Sainz, with the seven-time World Champion’s team manager Toto Wolff having to instruct his driver to “just drive” as Hamilton appeared distracted by the penalty and complained about others.
Lando Norris’s upgraded McLaren finished fifth, clear of Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin, while George Russell took eighth place.
The final points positions were held by Pierre Gasly of Alpine and Lance Stroll of Aston Mastin.
