With a score of less than 7, the American settled for a tie in 10th place after shooting 68 on Thursday and moving up 24 spots on the leaderboard. He was able to effectively settle over the under-3 cut line.
In the opening round, Schauffele teed off on the South Torrey Pines Golf Course and finished with a 3-under 69. In the first round, he had four birdies and one bogey; in the second, he made six birdies and two bogeys.
Most of the top-ranked golfers playing this week, including Max Homa, Patrick Cantlay, Hideki Matsuyama, Shane Lowry and Min Woo Lee, made the cut. However, Collin Morikawa and Sungjae Im struggled with their game and failed to make the cut.
