1. FIFA World Cup

The tournament will begin on June 11, 2026, in Mexico City, where Mexico will play the opening match of the World Cup. FIFA has confirmed that the first game of the expanded 48-team tournament will be held at the famous Estadio Azteca, making it the first stadium to host World Cup opening matches in three different editions of the competition.

The action will continue on June 12, 2026, when the first matches in the United States and Canada take place. Canada is scheduled to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, while the United States men’s national team will begin its campaign in Los Angeles against Paraguay. The home opener is expected to attract huge crowds as the Americans look to take advantage of playing in front of their own fans.

2. 126th U.S. Open Golf at Shinnecock Hills

From Thursday June 18, 2026, to Sunday, June 21, 2026, the 126th U.S. Open Golf Championship will be played at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. The official U.S. Open site says this will be the sixth time Shinnecock Hills hosts the championship. It also says the club is one of the five founding clubs of the USGA.

Shinnecock Hills is a very hard course. The USGA lists it at 7,440 yards and par 70 for 2026. The course is famous for firm fairways and fast greens, which can make scoring tough even for top players. The field will have 156 competitors, and the championship drew 10,201 entries.

The area around the course is expected to be crowded. The official fan guide says traffic management measures will be in place during championship week. Some roads near Shinnecock Hills are scheduled to close from June 15 to June 21, and the guide also warns that closures can extend to Monday, June 22 if play is delayed.

The championship office also expects over 3,000 volunteers to help run the event, which gives us a sense of how large and busy the week will be.

3. Juneteenth

Juneteenth National Independence Day is a federal holiday in the United States. The Office of Personnel Management lists it as one of the federal holidays, and it falls on June 19 every year. It remembers the end of slavery in Galveston, Texas, in 1865. On this day, many government offices, banks, and businesses close.

4. Father’s Day and the Summer Solstice

Father’s Day and the summer solstice both land on the same day. Timeanddate shows Father’s Day on June 21, and Farmers’ Almanac says the summer solstice 2026 is the first day of astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest day of the year. The Almanac also notes, “This year, Father’s Day falls on the same day as the start of summer. If you are planning a backyard cookout or a fishing trip, you will have the longest stretch of daylight all year to work with.”
