Oklahoma Dominates Super Bowl 58: While the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers prepare for their epic Super Bowl 58 showdown, 30 other teams are preparing to play on Super Sunday in 2025.
As a major component of the offseason roster construction formula, the NFL draft plays a significant role, and it should come as no surprise that the 49ers and Chiefs have made some good selections.
Although Patrick Mahomes is considered one of the best players in the league, he was selected 10th overall in the 2017 draft. The Chicago Bears selected him as the second quarterback (Mitchell Trubisky was the second) and he was one spot behind retired wide receiver John Ross.
He was the ninth quarterback taken in the 2022 NFL draft, behind some passers you may have already forgotten about. The 49ers’ quarterback was Brock Purdy. Remember Matt Corral (third round, Carolina Panthers) or Chris Oladokun (seventh round, Pittsburgh Steelers)? Neither player has been involved in an NFL game. Corral has left the NFL and Oladokun has joined the Chiefs’ practice squad.

The active rosters of the 49ers and Chiefs include players from a total of 67 colleges and universities. These range from FBS powerhouses like Georgia and Michigan to Division III Saint John’s (Minnesota).
There is no surprise that Oklahoma, one of the top programs in recent years, has the most players in the Super Bowl 58. The SEC is also the most represented college football conference (23 players to 19 for the Big Ten).
The fact that more undrafted players (18) than first-round picks (15) are currently on the active rosters of the Super Bowl 58 teams should surprise no one.

➤ Super Bowl 58 features 18 undrafted players but only three regular starters (excluding specialists). All three of those players are on the 49ers: center Jake Brendel, safety Tashaun Gipson and cornerback Charvarius Ward. Ward, a major contributor to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl 54 team, earned a selection for the Pro Bowl this season.
➤ The Chiefs and 49ers selected two of the NFL’s best tight ends. In 2013, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Kelce, while the San Francisco 49ers selected Kittle in 2017.
➤ The Jacksonville Jaguars originally drafted Blaine Gabbert, a Chiefs’ quarterback, in the first round of the 2011 draft. Jacksonville selected Brandon Allen, a 49ers’ quarterback, in the sixth round of the 2016 draft. The New York Jets selected Sam Darnold, the 49ers’ No. 2 quarterback.
➤ Kyle Juszczyk, the All-Pro fullback for the 49ers, attended Harvard. Justin Watson, the wide receiver for the Chiefs, attended Penn.
➤ In the 2020 NFL draft, the 49ers selected only five players, but all five players remain with the team.
➤ Both the 49ers and the Chiefs do not currently have Alabama players on their active rosters. In the third round of the 2023 NFL draft, the 49ers selected Cameron Latu. The Kansas City Chiefs have placed Isaiah Buggs on the practice squad. The Lions released Buggs on 02 January, 2024 after he started three games and played in ten games in 2023. The Chiefs signed Buggs to their practice squad shortly thereafter.
