Rise of Long-Distance Shooters in the NBA: The Significance of the ‘Logo 3’ Shot

The NBA has seen an uptick in players' proficiency in shooting beyond the 3-point line, with a noticeable increase in players who can shoot beyond thirty feet.

‘Logo 3’ Shot: The phrase “Logo 3” refers to a 3-point shot made by the logo surrounding the mid-court in the NBA. Since it has long been thought of as a shot with extremely little chance of success, supporters applaud enthusiastically for anyone who succeeds.

What is a Logo 3 Shot in the NBA?

The 3-point line is currently 23.77 feet from the hoop, although it shortens to 22 feet at the corners in the NBA. NBA teams shoot around one-third of their shots from beyond the arc, despite the distance and frequency of 3-pointers.

There’s been a noticeable uptick in the number of players who can shoot well beyond thirty feet, with more and more of them becoming proficient at it.

These shots, which are frequently taken from the center-court logo, have come to represent long-range accuracy. Even though statistics might not adequately convey the subtleties of the “logo range,” players like Damian Lillard have earned the moniker “Logo Lillard” for their striking impact.

The attraction of long-range shooting has also been influenced by the evolution of the on-court logos, with different designs presenting different opportunities and problems. Additionally, “Logo 3” has been included in the NBA Shooting Stars Challenge during NBA All-Star Weekend.

The logo shot first appeared in the 1990s, albeit infrequently, and was performed by Reggie Miller and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (aka Chris Jackson). A few half-court shots from the 2000s stand out, including Rasheed Wallace’s game-winning buzzer-beater against the Denver Nuggets.

Players have been making more attempts at the shot and doing it more regularly during the 2010s. Fans have been enthralled by the ‘Logo 3’ more often, thanks to players like Damian Lillard, Steph Curry, and Trae Young.

Steph Curry From “Tunnel Three” to “Logo Three”

With his unwavering ability to set records in every facet of 3-point shooting, Steph Curry is undoubtedly the best shooter in the NBA and the entire basketball community.

Since Curry has been extending the 3-point shot’s reach beyond the court for years, he appears to have elevated the technique to entirely new heights. Curry has made shootarounds entertaining by making the “Logo 3” popular and by going beyond the length of the court to put the ball inside the rim.

The four-time NBA champion was filmed shooting the ball from the stadium tunnel just before the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend. The video quickly gained popularity on social media.

Basketball is evolving, and as it does, more players are pushing the limits of long-range shooting and introducing fresh difficulties to the sport. This growth shows promise for the future.
