In 1871, following the establishment of the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players, Spalding joined the Boston Red Stockings. The Boston Red Stockings were the predecessors of the famous modern Atlanta Braves. He was tremendously successful there, winning 206 games. At age 27, he retired from the game in 1878.
