Western & Southern Open 2023: At the Western & Southern Open, the WTA and ATP fields are beginning to thin as players stamp their tickets to the Round of 16.

Ten Grand Slam singles champions with 45 titles, five past tournament champions, and five NCAA singles champions will take the court on Wednesday in an attempt to advance to the third round. No. 2 Novak Djokovic will face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on centre court in his first singles match on American territory in two years. No. 3 Daniil Medvedev and No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas won their initial matches on Tuesday night, following the advancement of No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz.

On the women’s side, No. 3 Jessica Pegula, who recently won the Canadian Open, opened play on centre court on Wednesday with a hard-fought victory over Martina Trevisan. Polish No. 1 Iga Swiatek defeated American qualifier Danielle Collins. This afternoon on the Grandstand, Venus Williams lost in three sets to the Chinese player Qinwen Zheng, who scored a first-round upset. The fifth-ranked Coco Gauff of the United States begins the singles competition on the centre court at midnight.

Tuesday saw the elimination of Peyton Stearns and JJ Wolf in the first round of the singles main draw. Tuesday, Stearns and companion Emma Navarro won the first round of the doubles tournament. Wednesday afternoon, the American pair was defeated by Desirae Krawczyk and Demi Schurrs in the second round.
