Why is the NFL Changing the Kick-Off? Exploring the League’s Latest Move

Why is the NFL Changing the Kick-Off: New kickoff rules have been introduced by the National Football League (NFL) to reduce concussion risk and increase return rates.

Ten kickers will stand at the 40-yard line of the receiving team after 2024. The kickers will begin 35 yards away from here. The return team will have nine people from the 35-yard line to the 30-yard line. People who can return the ball can be anywhere between the goal line and the 20-yard line.

Why is the NFL Changing the Kick-Off? Exploring the League’s Latest Move

The person who kicks or returns the ball can only move until it hits someone or the ground. After the kickoff at the 30-yard line, there will be no fair catches at all. Teams must first tell the judges they want to try an onside kick, then line up as usual.

Aside kick can’t be done without any reason. How the players are lined up is a little different from how it is done in the XFL and the new NFL. In its two seasons, 90% of players who played in the XFL came back. Coaches in the NFL want that number to go down to 80% by 2024.

The NFL has changed a lot of its rules to make kickoffs better over the last 15 years. In 2023, the 35-yard line will be where kickoffs happen. You won’t be able to wedge or double-team block either. It will also be possible to see the ball from the 25-yard line thanks to fair catch. Because of this, the number of touchbacks went up a lot in 2023. At 21.7%, this was the lowest return rate ever.

There were not as many concussions, but not because there were not as many returns. The league says that the average number of concussions per kickoff stayed the same.
