The background of World Table Tennis Day

Initially, table tennis was a parlour game. There are multiple claims that British military officers learned to play the game in India and carried it back to Britain. This early variant utilised a golf ball. Books were used as racquets and were also arranged in a net. The term ‘ping-pong’ was trademarked in 1901 by the business J. Jacques & Son Ltd, which popularised it. That year would prove pivotal in the annals of the game. James W. Gibb, a British Table Tennis enthusiast, discovered the superior celluloid balls during a journey to the United States in 1901. In the same year, E.C. Goode would go on to devise the modern racquet. Numerous tournaments were conducted prior to the 1902 unofficial world championship.

In spite of the existence of both the Ping-Pong Association and the Table Tennis Association, the Table Tennis Association was founded in 1926. The International Table Tennis Federation (I.T.T.F.) was founded in the same year and is the highest governing body of the sport at present. In 1926, London hosted the inaugural World Championship. The United States Table Tennis Association was founded in 1933 and is now known as USA Table Tennis. The I.T.T.F. is dedicated to guaranteeing that table tennis is played on every continent. Since then, the Federation has established I.T.T.F. Development in order to make the game accessible to the general public. The I.T.T.F. proclaimed World Table Tennis Day in 2015 in an effort to stimulate public interest in this competitive sport, and it has observed the occasion annually since then.

The ITTF has developed the Table Tennis for ALL software as part of its advocacy efforts. This innovation is intended to make the game significantly more accessible and popular. ALL signifies inclusion regardless of age, gender, social standing, tradition, or physical ability.
