Claude Code Overloaded Error: Why It Happens and How to Fix it?

Claude Code’s 'Overloaded' error usually happens due to heavy server traffic. It’s not your code. Waiting a few minutes is often the fastest and most effective fix.

Claude Code Overloaded Error: If Claude Code is showing the “Overloaded” message or Error 529, it usually means the problem is not on your side. The servers at Anthropic are simply too busy. Many users have reported this issue in late January 2026, especially when lots of people are coding at the same time. Your code is fine. The system is just full.

1. Waiting is the Best Fix

This error appears when too many users are trying to use the service at once. The server blocks new requests for a short time.

  • Do not keep clicking retry. Stop and wait for about 5–10 minutes.
  • If you keep trying again and again, the system may put you into a “cooldown” group. That can make you wait even longer.

2. Clean or Restart your Session

If you have been working for many hours without stopping, your session may be too heavy. This makes it harder for the server to accept your request when traffic is high.

Easy waysz to fix it:

  • Type /clear or /reset in the terminal to remove old history.
  • You can also type /compact to shorten the past conversation but keep the main idea.
  • Strong reset option: Close the terminal fully and open a new one. This gives you a fresh start.

3. Use the Built-In Check Tool

Claude Code has a tool that checks if something is wrong with your setup.

  • Command to run:
    claude doctor

This will tell you if your API key is wrong or if your internet or network is blocking the connection.

4. Log in Again

Sometimes the “Overloaded” message is hiding another issue. Your login token may have expired.

You should –

  • Run /logout and then log in again using claude login or claude auth login.

This forces the system to give you a new session token.

5. Check if the System is Down for Everyone

Before blaming your internet or computer, check if Anthropic is having problems.

  • Go to status.anthropic.com
  • If you see messages like “Degraded Performance” for the API or Claude Code, then the only solution is to wait.
