Is Facebook’s settlement legitimate?

A spokesperson for Meta told CBS MoneyWatch that the company pursued a settlement because it was in the best interests of its community and shareholders. “We are notifying people about this settlement through their Facebook notifications so they can decide whether or not to participate.”
However, the administrator of claim settlements advises claimants to be wary of unsolicited requests for personal information such as their Social Security number, which the administrator will never request. Similarly, inquiries for payment in exchange for a portion of the settlement are also suspicious.

Can my claim be updated if my information changes?

Can I create multiple Facebook accounts?
The administrator of the claim states that if you created but deleted one or more Facebook accounts, and then later created a new Facebook account, you may submit a claim for the entire period of time during which you had an active Facebook account.
However, if you had multiple accounts at once, you cannot file a claim for those additional accounts. In other words, according to the claim administrator, double-counting is prohibited.
Can I submit on behalf of a decedent?
Yes, but it requires a few additional procedures.
First, submit the claim under the deceased person’s name and complete the “Your Facebook Account” section of the claim form with their information.
Next, you must provide the administrator of the claim settlement with a request to alter the name to the beneficiary or the claimant’s estate. To do so, you must provide proof of the reason for the name change, such as a copy of the decedent’s death certificate. Send an email to the administrator through the administrator’s secure portal with the justification and supporting documents.
You can use the secure portal to send an email to administrative@angeiongroup.com. Use the subject line “Name Change – Facebook User Privacy Settlement” and include the claim ID from the claim confirmation along with the deceased individual’s full name. The site will also request your email address and password for registration.

How much will I receive as Facebook Privacy Settlement?
According to the settlement website, the settlement amount per user will depend on the number of individuals who submit a claim.
The attorneys involved in the case will presumably deduct a portion of the settlement for their fees. According to the claim website, they could receive up to 25% of the settlement, or $181,3 million. If they receive this amount, the settlement will be reduced to $543.7 million for Facebook users who request a portion.
When will I receive the funds of Facebook Privacy Settlement?
Not before the end of the year at the earliest.
The claims website indicates that a final approval hearing for the settlement will take place on September 7, at which time the court will determine whether to approve the agreement and award solicitors’ fees and other costs. If the settlement is approved, the case could still be subject to appeals, the duration of which is uncertain, according to the website.
“Settlement payments will be distributed as soon as possible if the court grants final approval of the settlement and after any appeals are resolved,” the document states.
Can I opt out of the settlement, and why should I if I can?
Yes, Facebook users had the opportunity to opt out of the settlement, but the deadline to do so passed on July 26. According to the settlement website, you may have done so if you wanted to maintain your right to sue the company separately over the issues and allegations in the case.
How can I oppose the Facebook Privacy Settlement?
Additionally, the deadline for filing an objection to the Facebook settlement has passed, as of July 26.
According to the settlement website, Facebook users could send the court reasons why the settlement should not be approved, but they could not request a different remedy. The court can only approve or reject the settlement; if it is rejected, no payments will be made and the litigation will continue.
What if I take no action?
If you neither submit a claim nor opt out of the settlement, you forfeit your right to file a lawsuit, continue a lawsuit, or participate in any other litigation against Facebook regarding the case’s legal issues. According to the website, you won’t receive any of the settlement money either
