The background of System Administrator Appreciation Day

Ted Kekatos initiated the first System Administrator Appreciation Day in 2000. As a system administrator, Kekatos installed a number of Hewlett-Packard (HP) printers in his office. Kekatos had viewed an advertisement for these printers by HP, in which the system administrator was inundated with flowers and gifts by the rest of the office staff. Kekatos, aware of the effort and commitment required for his job as a system administrator, decided to establish a special day on which system administrators throughout the country and the world can be honoured. He proclaimed July’s final Friday to be System Administrator Appreciation Day. He has also been quoted as saying that the day need not be replete with extravagant festivities. A modest celebration with cake and ice cream would suffice as well.

A system administrator, or sysadmin, monitors the operating systems of computers, servers, and other technological devices. A systems administrator is responsible for ensuring that performance, security, and resources are optimised within a specified budget. In addition, a system administrator will ensure that users/clients can use the upgraded devices without any issues. Sysadmins must always be familiar with a device’s inner workings. Problem-solving is one of the most essential facets of their employment.
