World Password Day raises awareness of the significance of strong passwords and the need to change passwords every few weeks. One compromised password can compromise our digital identities and personal data.
Still using the name of your cat followed by a “&” as your 401(k) password? Sorry, but this is insufficient to protect your retirement savings in 2019. Here’s a term you should be familiar with on World Password Day: #LayerUp.
This refers to incorporating robust authentication into your essential passwords in order to prevent identity theft and other cybercrimes.
World Password Day was established by Intel on the first Thursday of May (May 4) to address the critical need for strong passwords. It’s quite straightforward, in reality. The majority of operating systems facilitate the creation and storage of passwords. “Keychain Access” by Apple is one example. You can also generate passwords online that are virtually hacker-proof.
Thus, “e9UBct*35TwhT&p/’e:y” has replaced “MisterWhiskers.”

Passwords must be robust and secure, particularly now that the majority of our work is conducted online. Complex and distinctive passwords that are not easily guessed are preferable. Professional hackers can guess our passwords in seconds, despite our best efforts to convince ourselves that no one will be able to predict them. Even if a robust password is in place, it should be changed every few weeks or months. This way, even if your passwords are revealed in a data breach, a new, more secure password can prevent unauthorised access to your personal data.
Sadly, despite being aware of the dangers, few individuals regularly alter their passwords. World Password Day is your cue to alter the passwords of your email accounts, social media accounts, and, most importantly, accounts containing your personal information.
Mark Burnett, a security researcher, suggested in 2005 that everyone should have their own “password days” for changing their credentials. This concept was outlined in his book “Perfect Passwords,” which inspired Intel to establish a global observance. 2013 marked the first observance of World Password Day, which was established on the first Thursday of May.
