The Virgin Mary’s bodily ascend to heaven at the end of her life is commemorated on this holy day. Festivals, vibrant street processions, pyrotechnics, and spectacle mark Assumption celebrations. Although a “feast” is not necessarily necessary, blessing the summer crop is a long-standing custom. Even the meals that are served to family members include special “Assumption” dishes.
