It is affiliated with the University of Mumbai and recognized by the Maharashtra Government. In 2012 the NAAC council re-accredited the university with an A grade. 

Somaiya Vidyavihar University has more than seventy well-equipped laboratories and workshops. It has also installed more than one 1300+ computers and has more than 31 900 books in its library.

• The common courses offered by Somaiya Vidyavihar University are PhD, MTech and BTech.

• Admission to the courses is based on marks from entrance tests such as GATE and JEE Mains. 
• The university runs weekly Ethics and Gita lessons to instil character and self-confidence in students. 
• Students who fail to comply with the instructions will not be allowed on campus.
• Students are not allowed to enter with Transistors, Radios, Tape Recorders or any musical instrument without permission from the College principal. Doing so will result in severe consequences from the disciplinary board.
• The university has established a placement cell managed by students. The placement cell conducts sessions and workshops to assist in passing out students with the necessary skills required in the job industry.
• The placement cell managed to invite more than thirty- seven companies. The companies include Bajaj Allianz, Wipro, Capgemini, etc. 
• The placement cell has managed to place past graduates in job opportunities to earn at least INR 440000 per year. Some meritorious students have been placed in companies where they are paid INR 1800000 per year. 
• The university has also formed social clubs and forums for students. The forums and clubs are Readers Club, Entrepreneurial Cell, Investor Forum, Celestial, Yuva-The Students Forum, MediaTheque, Zenith, Utkarsh, etc.
