Profession

Atal was an active member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, having joined initially as a volunteer or Swayamseval and eventually becoming a ‘vistarak’ (a probationary full-time worker). As a vistarak in Uttar Pradesh, he worked for multiple journals, including Panchjanya (a weekly Hindi publication), Rashtra Dharma (a monthly Hindi publication), and Swadesh and Veer Arjun (dailies).

Vajpayee entered national politics for the first time in 1942, during the Quit India Movement, which eventually led to the end of British colonial authority in India. He had begun a career as a journalist but was unable to continue because he joined the then-Bharatiya Janata Sangh, which eventually morphed into the present-day Bharatiya Janata Party.

He was initially designated as the party’s national secretary and given responsibility for the Delhi-based northern region. In 1968, following the death of Deendayal Upadhyaya, Atal became the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Sangh and its president. Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee possessed eloquent oratorical skills, which he utilised to defend the Sangh’s policies with brilliance.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was elected to the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Parliament) nine times and the Rajya Sabha twice during his national political career. He is therefore regarded as a seasoned politician.

In 1996, he was inaugurated as India’s tenth prime minister. However, when the Bharatiya Janata Party failed to establish a majority in the Lok Sabha, Vajpayee resigned 16 days later as it became clear that he lacked the necessary support to form a government.

After the 1998 general elections, which led to the formation of the National Democratic Alliance, he began his second tenure as prime minister. This administration led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee lasted for a total of thirteen months.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s third and final term spanned the entire five-year period from 1999 to 2004. Since Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the only candidate to have won two consecutive terms as Prime Minister of India.
