Early Life
On December 24, 1922, Ava Lavinia Gardner was born in Grabtown, North Carolina, to poor tobacco sharecroppers Jonas Bailey Gardner and Mary Elizabeth Gardner. She was born into a large family with six siblings and was of English and Scots-Irish origin. Her parents lost their house when she was a little child. After that, they moved to Virginia’s Newport News. Gardner’s father passed away in 1938. The family relocated to Rock Ridge when she was fifteen, and she attended high school there, earning her diploma in 1939.
Career
Gardner’s career started in 1940 when her brother-in-law, a photographer, chose to shoot her image while she was visiting her sister. The pictures came out so beautifully that he displayed them in front of his store, catching the attention of a lawyer who requested that they email M.G.M. her details. After M.G.M. interviewed Gardner, the production company gave him a typical contract. She starred in her first feature film, “We Are Dancing,” in 1942. The following year, Gardner made her cinematic debut in “Ghosts on the Loose.”
Gardner rose to fame in “The Killers” (1946) as a femme fatale. She starred in several films in the 1950s, including “Show Boat” (1951), “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” (1952), “Bhowani Junction” (1956), and others. She portrayed Maxine Faulk in the highly regarded film “The Night of the Iguana” (1964) and Soledad in the critically acclaimed “The Angel Wore Red” (1960) in the 1960s. In 1942, she wed Mickey Rooney; the following year, they got divorced. She wed Artie Shaw for the second time in 1945–1946. On January 25, 1990, she passed away from pneumonia and fibrosing alveolitis. Gardner did not have children and was surviving by friends and family.
