The broadcast began at the usual time of 9:30 a.m., but the crew encountered technical difficulties when the prerecorded VT would not play. After a brief delay, Chubbuck continued reading her prepared remarks: “You will witness another first: a suicide attempt. This is consistent with Channel 40’s policy of delivering you the most up-to-date gore and colour.”
Then, Chubbuck drew a.38 calibre Smith & Wesson handgun from the suitcase containing the puppets she used to perform for children with intellectual disabilities at a local hospital and shot herself behind the right ear. Thousands of people witnessed her suicide on live television.

The 15th of July began normally until Chubbuck (who was significantly more upbeat and enthusiastic than usual) informed her colleagues that she needed to read a newscast before Suncoast Digest went on the air, surprising them (because she had never done this before).
The audience listened indifferently for eight minutes as she read three significant national news items from the newscast. When she reached the fourth story (about a shooting at a local restaurant), the reel jammed, causing her to sigh and exclaim:
