Mohammed Yusuf Khan was born to Ayesha Begum and Lala Ghulam Sarwar Khan in 1922 as Dilip Kumar. He was one of twelve children born to the couple in the Qissa Khawani Bazar neighbourhood of Peshawar on December 11, 1922. His father was a landlord and produce merchant, while his mother was a housewife.
Mohammed Yusuf received an education in Nashik. Raj Kapoor was his childhood companion and next-door neighbour.
He departed for Pune after an altercation with his father when he was a teenager. Through the assistance of the Parsi contractor Kumar, he obtained his first employment based on his proficiency in English.
