Born in South Africa, Phillips immigrated to New Zealand when he was five years old. He received his education and participated in cricket at Sacred Heart College. He made his List A debut in the Ford Trophy on January 24, 2015.

On December 4, 2016, Phillips debuted in Twenty20 during the 2016–17 Super Smash against the Otago Volts, opening the proceedings with 55 runs off 32 deliveries. His 369 runs ranked him as the Super Smash’s leading scorer. Duckworth-Lewis determined the outcome of the Stags’ final regular season match against Central Districts, in which he amassed his initial century (116 not out). Phillips was the inaugural player in a single domestic season to amass centuries in all three formats of the game. He joined Hamish Marshall as the second domestic player to accomplish this feat.

On March 6, 2017, he debuted in first-class action against Canterbury during the 2016–17 Plunket Shield season. He was granted a contract with Auckland for the 2018–19 season in June 2018.

IInternational career

Following the injury-related absence of Martin Guptill, he was appointed to the Twenty20 International (T20I) squad of New Zealand for their series against South Africa in February 2017. On 17 February 2017, he made his Twenty20 International debut for New Zealand against South Africa at Eden Park in Auckland.

He was named to the One Day International (ODI) squad of New Zealand for their series against India in October 2017. Nevertheless, he was not a participant in that particular series. Phillips was called upon by New Zealand to participate in the third Test match against Australia in December 2019, following the withdrawal of Henry Nicholls and Kane Williamson due to influenza-like symptoms.
