Early Life
South African-born John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein on January 3, 1892. Mabel Tolkien and Arthur Reuel Tolkien were his parents. His dad was the manager of a bank. On February 17, 1894, Tolkien’s younger brother, Hilary Arthur Tolkien, was born. When he was three years old, his mother and brother accompanied him on a family vacation to England. Sadly, before he could travel to South Africa to join them, his father passed away.
Career
Afterwards, they made their home with his mother’s parents in Birmingham, England. Tolkien became interested in plants and the natural world when his mother taught him about botany. In addition to taking a particular interest in languages, Tolkien delighted in sketching trees and landscapes. He learned Latin from his mother. He was extremely young when he started to read and write. Tolkien enjoyed reading, and some of the works he eventually read had an impact on his writing. When Tolkien’s mother passed away in 1904, at the age of 12, a Catholic priest assumed care of both him and his brother.
After attending King Edward’s School in Birmingham and Exeter College in Oxford, Tolkien graduated from Exeter College in 1915. Tolkien entered the British Army on July 15, 1915, as a second lieutenant during the First World War. On July 16, 1919, he was declared out of active duty. He would eventually leave the army in 1920. From 1920 until 1925, Tolkien was a professor of English language and literature at the University of Leeds. From 1925 until 1959, he was also an instructor at the University of Oxford.
In secret, Tolkien penned a collection of fantasy tales he termed “The Legendarium,” which became known as “The Silmarillion” and frequently dealt with grim themes. Later on, Tolkien wrote several kid-friendly tales for his kids, among them “The Hobbit.” A friend who worked for a London publishing company persuaded him to submit the novel for publication after reading it in 1936. A year afterward, it was released. The novel went on to become so well-liked that the publishers asked to write a sequel.
The necessity for this follow-up led Tolkien to pen “The Lord of the Rings,” which saw publication in 1954. In the 1960s, it gained popularity, and it still does. At the boarding house where he and his brother resided, Tolkien met Edith Mary Bratt, who would become his wife, when he was sixteen. She was an orphan as well. They fell in love, but Tolkien’s guardian opposed them, saying that since Edith was the older of the two and a protestant, their connection was inappropriate. Until he was 21, he forbade Tolkien from visiting or conversing with her.
Personal Life
Tolkien wrote Bratt a letter on his 21st birthday, proposing marriage. She gave back the engagement ring she had received from her prior suitor after accepting Tolkien’s proposal.
