Jennifer Connelly Biography

Early Life

On December 12, 1970, Jennifer Connelly was born in Cairo, New York, in the Catskill Mountains. She is the daughter of clothing manufacturer Gerard Karl Connelly and antique dealer Ilene. Her mother was Jewish, having attended a yeshiva, and her father was Catholic of Irish descent. The great-grandparents of Connelly’s mother were Jewish immigrants from Russia and Poland. The actress attended Saint Ann’s, a private school with an emphasis on the arts, while growing up in Brooklyn Heights, close to the Brooklyn Bridge.

Jennifer Connelly: Career

Connelly’s father had asthma, so the family moved to Woodstock in 1976 to get away from the pollution. Her father’s friend, a publicist, recommended that she try out for modeling when she was ten years old. After her parents gave their approval, she sent a photo of herself to the Ford Modeling Agency, who promptly added it to their roster. Next, Connelly started doing print ad modeling before transitioning to television commercials.

Little Connelly went back to Saint Ann’s School after the family relocated to Brooklyn Heights in 1981. The following year, she was cast in her first feature film as a young, aspiring dancer and actress named Deborah Gelly. She did a ballet routine at the audition even though she had never taken ballet classes. She was cast because of her outstanding acting and because her nose looked similar to Elizabeth McGovern’s, who played the adult role. In 1984, the movie “Once Upon a Time in America” was released. Later, in 1986 and 1988, she was featured on the covers of multiple issues of the teen publication “Seventeen.”

Connelly chose to attend Yale University to study English literature in 1988 after finishing high school. She characterizes herself as a responsible learner who wasn’t overly preoccupied with sleeping, eating a lot, or maintaining a social life. Jennifer Connelly identified as a geek who hung out in the library most of the time. She transferred to Stanford University to pursue acting studies after two years at Yale. Her parents supported her decision to pursue a career in film, so she left college that year and entered the business again.

She stated in various interviews that she didn’t intend to become an actress while modeling. Her most recent film, “Top Gun: Maverick,” features her as Penelope “Penny” Benjamin, the romantic interest of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise.
