Joan Jett Birthday

Joan Marie Larkin, better known by her stage name Joan Jett, is a rock and roll legend. She rose to fame as the main singer of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, a legendary band with a 30-year career. Jett was born on September 22, 1958, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to parents James and Dorothy Larkin. Her mother was a secretary, while her father was an insurance broker. Together with her two siblings, she was reared in Philadelphia’s suburbs before moving to Rockville, Maryland in 1967. There, she attended Randolph Junior High before transferring to Wheaton High School. Her fascination in music started at an early age. She received her first guitar at the age of 13 and began taking guitar lessons, but she eventually quit because her instructor taught her only folk tunes. When her family relocated to West Covina, California, she had the chance to broaden her musical interests.

Shortly after the relocation and the divorce of her parents, she changed her name. For musical purposes, she assumed the alias Joan Jett at that time. She began by co-founding The Runaways with Sandy West. Later, Micki Steele, Jackie Fox Lita Ford, and Cherie Currie joined them, completing the band’s original configuration. Despite the fact that Currie was the main singer and Jett played the guitar, she also sang lead and co-wrote the songs. Their most successful album, “Live in Japan,” became one of the best-selling imports in the annals of the United States and the United Kingdom. They rapidly gained worldwide recognition, particularly in Japan and England. In England, she first heard ‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll’ when Arrows performed it on their weekly television program, “Arrows.” Jett took over lead vocals when Currie departed the band, and the band released two more albums before disbanding in 1979.

In the same year she returned to the United States, she met record producer Kenny Laguna while working on the film “We’re All Crazee Now!” and they moved to New York. 1980 saw the formation of their own record label, Blackheart Records, to promote Jett’s self-titled debut. Additionally, they founded the Blackhearts Band. Despite their financial difficulties, they traversed the United States and established a name for themselves. 1981 was a pivotal year for Jett & the Blackhearts because of their career-defining performance at the Palladium in New York City. Later, they published the iconic version of ‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,’ and the rest is history.
