Jonny Bairstow Career

Jonny Bairstow, a right-handed wicket-keeper batsman for Yorkshire, is the son of former England keeper David Bairstow. His introduction to the game was natural and occurred at a young age, and within a short time he received numerous accolades. Due to his 654 runs during the 2007 season, he was selected as the Young Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year. In 2008, he impressed many with his consistent batting, scoring 308 runs at an average of 61.6 to represent Yorkshire’s second XI. This included a not-out score of 139 at Headingley Carnegie against Worcestershire. Bairstow signed a full-time contract with the county side in October of that year.

In the second innings of his first-class début in 2009, he scored the highest score with an unbeaten 82. He went on to become a fixture in the county team over the next two years, and averaged more than forty in both. He achieved eight fifties but was unable to convert them into hundreds. 2011 proved to be a stronger year for the youngster, as he was chosen for the England Lions’ January tour of the West Indies. In May of that year, he scored his first first-class century, which he doubled, and was selected for the national team to play against Ireland in an ODI in August. However, he was not chosen for the starting lineup.

His first international appearance was in the fifth ODI against the visiting Indians in Cardiff, and he made it memorable by scoring 41 runs off 21 balls to help England win. Further success in a warm-up match against India and in Twenty20 matches against Pakistan led to Bairstow’s first Test selection against the West Indies. At the start of the 2012 season, Bairstow had already scored two magnificent hundreds for Yorkshire and was keen to capitalize on his success. His Test debut against the West Indies was unremarkable and he performed poorly with the bat.

The following year, he was overlooked for the first two Tests against South Africa in favor of Ravi Bopara but was recalled for the third Test when Kevin Pietersen was dismissed. Bairstow responded effectively with a 95 and a standing ovation before leaving the field. In the second innings, he scored another stylish fifty, but it was not enough to help England win. Later, he scored 182 against Leicestershire at Scarborough in the LV Championship and 68 not out against Sussex in the semi-finals of the Friends Life T20.

Bairstow was a member of the England selection for the 2012 ICC World Twenty20, but his contribution was insignificant and he failed to flourish with the bat. Bairstow was included in the England team that toured India in 2012-2013 and performed exceedingly well in the warm-up match against Mumbai A, hitting a remarkable 118. The only reason he was included in the squad for the second Test was to replace Ian Bell, but his performance did not merit his inclusion for the third Test.

Bairstow made his long-awaited Ashes debut at Nottingham in 2013 after scoring 64 laced with powerful cuts and controlled pulls on his native ground in Headingley against the Kiwis. However, Bairstow scored only one fifty in the four games he participated in, capping a rather lackluster series. Bairstow then traveled to Australia for the return Ashes series and played a couple of games in Melbourne and Sydney, but was unable to save his team from a precarious situation. Bairstow’s 2015 tour of South Africa saw him reach his peak performance.

The wicketkeeper-batsman scored his first Test century in Cape Town, shared a 399-run partnership with Ben Stokes for the sixth wicket, and finished the series with 359 runs at an astounding average of 89.75. The following summer, he scored two centuries against Sri Lanka. A successful series against Pakistan was followed by a successful tour of the subcontinent. Bairstow not only amassed 1470 runs at an average of 58.8 during 2016, but also set a record with 70 dismissals in his capacity as a wicket-keeper, the most by any keeper in a calendar year.

Each English and Australian athlete is characterized by their performance in the Ashes. Bairstow was one of the few visiting batsmen to stand out during England’s drubbing in Australia during the 2017-18 series. He appeared relatively at ease against Australia’s rampant pace attack and scored a century in Perth, unlike many of his teammates. Given the number of starts he received, Bairstow would be dissatisfied with his performance throughout the series. However, the tour would only serve to enhance his mental state.

Because of Buttler’s exploits, it was difficult for Bairstow to break into the XI as the wicket-keeper batsman in the shorter formats. Bairstow was selected as the opening batsman due to his dominant performance during the 2016–17 season and Jason Roy’s poor run of form. It didn’t take him long to create an impression, as he scored two centuries in home ODIs against West Indies in 2017.

In 2018, Bairstow became the first English batsman to score three consecutive hundreds in one-day internationals. In the latter part of that year, Bairstow’s performance declined. When he sprained his ankle while playing football in training during the away series against Sri Lanka, it almost appeared as though he had given up his spot in the starting XI, as Bairstow, Alex Hales, and Jason Roy were competing for two positions. However, Alex Hales’ withdrawal from the World Cup squad solved the issue for the team management, as the starting position was secured.

Bairstow has been an indispensable member of the ‘New England’ team, which not only entered the multi-nation competition as the top-ranked team in the world, but also as one of the tournament’s favorites. He had an outstanding World Cup, scoring two hundred and two fifties while featuring in all England games. Jonny Bairstow was the second-leading run scorer for England in their historic World Cup-winning campaign.

Bairstow’s white ball performance declined after the 2019 World Cup, culminating in a disastrous 2021 T20I World Cup in which he amassed 47 runs across six games. This resulted in Bairstow’s eventual dismissal from the white ball squad, with selectors selecting for more format-specific players. As a Test batsman, Bairstow came of batting agermând. He was the only English player to achieve a century in a forgettable Ashes series in Australia, in which England was defeated 4-0.

Bairstow followed that up with a hundred away in the West Indies, where he was once again a shining beacon for his team during a forgettable tour. Trevos Bayliss was replaced by Brendon McCullum as a result of England’s poor performance as a team, which led to coaching changes. This proved to be another boon for Jonny Bairstow, as McCullum instructed the England squad to play freely and fearlessly. Jonny Bairstow was the first crown prince of this English cricket revolution, as he annihilated the visiting New Zealand squad. In two of the three Tests, he struck a century, earning him the Man of the Series award. Also scoring a century in the rescheduled fifth Test against India, Bairstow helped England tie the series at 2-2.

Jonny Bairstow was looking like the glue around whom the English red ball team was being constructed, but a freak leg injury while golfing kept him incapacitated for a long, long period.

Jonny Bairstow IPL Career

Jonny Bairstow signed up for the IPL for the first time in 2019, and Sunrisers Hyderabad selected him. There, he established a lethal partnership with David Warner to open the batting. It was the first and only occasion in IPL history that two openers scored centuries in the same game. In his first season, Bairstow averaged over 55 and had a strike rate of over 150.

The following season, however, Bairstow’s performances declined as the IPL relocated to the United Arab Emirates: his strike rate fell below 125 and his average reached 31.96. The following season, he began brilliantly for SRH, scoring 248 runs in seven matches before the IPL was canceled. However, he missed the UAE phase of the competition, citing bubble fatigue. Bairstow was selected by Punjab Kings in the 2022 mega auction, but he had a shaky tournament due to being batted at various positions in the batting order. Bairstow was retained for the 2023 season, but an injury has ruled him out.
