Kathryn Lee Gifford was born in Paris, France on August 16, 1953 to Joan and Aaron Epstein. Her father was a Navy officer stationed in France and other European countries, where she grew up. In 1957, the couple returned to the United States and settled in Bowie, Maryland. She became a born-again Christian at age 12 after watching “The Restless Ones.” She attended Bowie High School, where she sang in the folk group Pennsylvania Next Right and performed at school assemblies. After graduating from high school in 1971, she attended Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to study acting and music. Nonetheless, she pulled out of college during her junior year.
In 1972, she performed on Oral Roberts’ live television broadcast from Burbank, California. She also attended revival meetings throughout the Bible Belt. The spiritual book “The Quiet Riot” was published in 1976. Between 1976 and 1978, she released three gospel albums and appeared on Christian television programmes such as “The 700 Club” with her first spouse, the leader of her “Bible” study group, Paul Johnson. She was selected to portray Nurse Callahan for nine months while visiting a friend on the set of the NBC soap opera “Days of Our Lives.” From 1977 to 1978, she appeared on the game programme “Name That Tune” as a performer. This exposure led to a role on the television sitcom “Hee Haw Honeys,” in addition to other opportunities. She replaced Ann Abernathy as co-host of “The Morning Show” on WABC-TV with Regis Philbin in June 1985. In 1988, the show’s title was changed to “Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee,” and Kathie Lee became nationally recognised. Their relationship made them an immediate sensation.
