Mamta was born on 20 April 1972 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, to a middle-class Marathi Brahmin family. Her family formerly resided in the Mumbai neighbourhood of Versova.

In Mumbai, she graduated from St. Joseph’s Convent High School. Her mother encouraged her to become an actress despite her initial lack of interest in the field. Due to family pressure, her mother was unable to pursue her ambition of becoming an actress and achieving prominence. Then she decided to enrol her daughter in acting school.

Mamta is a highly religious individual. She stated in an interview that had she not chosen acting as a profession, she may have pursued spiritualism.

When she took a hiatus from acting, she began a roughly 12-year period of meditation and penance. At the time, Mamta was completely devoted to spirituality. In 2013, she went to Maha Kumbh. She asserted that she had attained enlightenment and renounced herself to God through her Guru’s mercy.
