Soon after being signed to Bad Boy Records, Mase launched his career under the mononym ‘Mase.’ He subsequently released popular albums such as “Harlem World,” “Double Up,” and “Welcome Back.”
Mase and his twin sister were born in Jacksonville, Florida to P.K. and Mason Betha, and he grew up with four other siblings. Mase’s mother relocated him and his siblings to Harlem, New York, after his father abandoned the family when he was three years old. Though Mase displayed interest and potential in basketball, he realised that his dream of playing for the National Basketball Association would not be feasible and consequently shifted his focus to pursuing a career in music.
He began rapping initially as a hobby with his companion Cam’ron. Together with Big L, Herb McGruff, and Bloodshed, the two assumed the monikers Murda Mase and Killa Cam, respectively, and founded the group Children of Corn. Damon Dash managed the group for a limited time. Mase signed with Bad Boy Records shortly after meeting Puff Daddy and performing for him at the Hard Rock Cafe. Mase also appeared on numerous songs with other artists from his label, such as Puff Daddy’s ‘Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down’ and Notorious B.I.G. ‘Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems.’ The RIAA certified his debut album, “Harlem World,” as quadruple platinum, and his second and third albums, “Double Up” and “Welcome Back,” as gold. In 1999, Mase retired from music for five years to enlist in college and pursue a “calling from God.” Later years of his career were marred by disputes with Diddy and Cam’ron, despite the fact that things initially went well for him after 2004. After more than a decade of marriage, Mase and Twyla Betha divorced in 2014.
