Mohamed Bazoum Biography: Age, Career, Family, Personal Life, and Net Worth

Mohamed Bazoum Biography: On April 2, 2021, Mohamed Bazoum was sworn in as the president of Niger. Bazoum was born in Bilabrine, Cercle N’guigme, Niger, on January 1, 1960. His family belonged to the Arab Diffa minority. In Niger, he attended local institutions. Then he attended the Cheikh Diop University in Dakar, Senegal, to study philosophy. After completing his education, he returned to Niger to teach.

In Niger, Bazoum became involved in the labor movement and politics. In the 1990s, he and Mahamadou Issoufou founded the Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism. Bazoum was elected to the National Assembly in 1993. In 1995, he held the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs in the national government. In 2011, he assisted in Issoufou’s effective presidential campaign. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, African Integration, and Nigerians Abroad from 2011 to 2015. During Issoufou’s second tenure in office, Bazoum served as Minister of State for Interior, Public Security, Decentralization, and Customary and Religious Affairs from 2016 to 2020.

Bazoum resigned from the government in 2020 to compete for president. After two mandates of Mahamadou Issoufou’s administration, he was viewed as a continuity candidate. On December 20, 2020, Bazoum received 39% of the vote in the election. On February 21, 2021, a runoff election was conducted between the two leading candidates. This time, 55% of the vote went to Bazoum.

A coup attempt occurred on March 31, a few days before Bazoum’s inauguration, but government-aligned troops quickly put it down. As originally scheduled, Bazoum was sworn in on April 2, 2021. This was the first time in Niger’s history that a democratically elected leader had peacefully transitioned to another.

As president, Bazoum was confronted with formidable obstacles, including extreme poverty, high unemployment, and jihadist rebel activity. Bazoum ran on a platform of limiting family size, expanding literacy in the nation, and combating corruption. He advocated for female education on the grounds that education can help attain gender equality. He intended to strengthen national security and coordinate with neighboring states, France, and the United States to combat the ISIS insurgency that has been rampaging in parts of the Sahel.

Hadiza Ben Mabrouk is married to Bazoum, the first Diffa Arab to become president of Niger. In a coup on July 26, 2023, the Niger presidential security forces removed President Bazoum.
