Nina Simone Birthday
Simone was the second youngest child of eight. She was born in Tryon, North Carolina, to a poor family. When Simone was a child, she desired to become a concert pianist. She received a scholarship to attend Allen High School for Girls in Asheville, North Carolina. After graduation, she enrolled at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City for three months of study. She was denied admission to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia due to her skin colour, but ironically, days before her death in 2003, the institution awarded her an honorary degree.
Simone changed her name to Nina Simone to conceal her identity from her family and began playing piano in an Atlantic City nightclub, which launched her career as a jazz vocalist. Her family believed that Simone’s music was evil. Between 1958 and 1974, she recorded more than 40 albums, beginning with “Little Girl Blue” and her 1958 hit single “I Love, Porgy.”
Simone’s genre of music was a fusion of gospel and pop, influenced by classical music, and accompanied by her jazz-like contralto singing. She was also well-known for using her musical platform to advocate for activism and equality; in an interview, Simone stated, “I believe women play a significant role in opening the doors to a better global understanding.”
