Nizhalgal Ravi, whose actual name is Ravi Shankar, was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, on September 16, 1956. He attended Wesley Higher Secondary School in Royapettah, Chennai after growing up in a middle-class household.

Ravi had a serious interest in acting and theatre as a young man. He was a member of the Chennai theatre company “Koothu-P-Pattarai” and performed in numerous performances. Prior to making his acting debut in the 1980 film “Nizhalgal,” which earned him the nickname “Nizhalgal” Ravi, he was briefly engaged in the Tamil film industry as an assistant director.

Nizhalgal Ravi began his career in the 1980 Tamil film Nizhalgal, directed by the seasoned Bharathiraja, which earned him the nickname Nizhalgal. He has portrayed many noteworthy characters in blockbuster films such as Chinna Thambi Periya Thambi (1987), Nayakan (1987), and Vedham Pudhu (1987), among others. His versatility has earned him praise from the entire industry and the general public. In the 1980s, he appeared in over 20 Malayalam films before transitioning to Tamil films. He paired with several prominent actresses Raadhika, Radha, Gautami, Khushbu, Ramya Krishnan, Revathi, Urvashi, Bhanupriya, Amala, Ranjini, Seetha, Kanaka, Saranya Ponvannan, Kasthuri, Rohini.

PSG Arts College granted him a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in economics. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he appeared in the telefilm Rail Sneham by K. Balachander.
