Norman Gene MacDonald was born on October 17, 1959, in Quebec City, Quebec, to teachers Ferne (Mains) and Percy Lloyd MacDonald. MacDonald attended Quebec High School and then graduated two years early from Gloucester High School in Ottawa. Before bowing out, he studied mathematics at Carleton University in Ottawa. Before becoming a comedian, he briefly enrolled in a journalism and television broadcasting course at Algonquin College and worked a variety of manual labour jobs between school terms.
In 1985, MacDonald’s first comedy performances were at stand-up venues in Ottawa, where he frequently appeared during amateur nights at Yuk Yuk’s.
