Ramakrishna Paramahansa Biography: Birthday, Early Life, Career, Personal Life, Death

On February 18, 1836, Ramakrishna was born as Gadadhar Chattopadhyay to Khudiram Chattopadhyay and Chandramani Devi.

Ramakrishna Paramahansa Biography: Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, one of the most prominent religious figures of India during the nineteenth century, was a mystic and yogi who translated complex spiritual concepts into clear and readily understandable language. Ramakrishna was a simple yogi. He was born to a Bengali rural household in 1836. He pursued the Divine in its various manifestations throughout his existence and believed that the Supreme Being embodied itself in every individual.

Ramakrishna was the embodiment of spiritual salvation for troubled spirits of all walks of life, and was sometimes believed to be the modern incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He was a critical figure in the revival of Hinduism in Bengal during a time of intense spiritual crisis in the province, which resulted in the majority of young Bengalis adopting Brahmoism and Christianity. Swami Vivekananda, his most prominent disciple, spread his teachings and philosophy to the world through Ramakrishna Mission after his demise in 1886. His teachings were essentially as traditional as those of ancient sages and seers, yet he has remained modern throughout the eras.

Early Years

On February 18, 1836, Ramakrishna was born as Gadadhar Chattopadhyay to Khudiram Chattopadhyay and Chandramani Devi. The impoverished Brahmin family was originally from the Hoogly district village of Kamarpukur.

Gadadhar was sent to the village school to study Sanskrit, but as a reluctant student, he frequently skipped class. He enjoyed painting and creating clay sculptures of Hindu deities and goddesses. Folk and mythological tales that he had heard from his mother fascinated him. He progressively memorised the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Puranas, and other sacred texts by hearing them recited by priests and sages. Young Gadadhar cherished nature so much that he frequently spent time in vineyards and along riverbanks.

Gadadhar was religiously inclined from an early age, and he would experience spiritual exaltation from ordinary occurrences. Whenever he was performing pujas or observing a religious spectacle, he would enter a trance.

After the death of Gadadhar’s father in 1843, his older sibling Ramkumar assumed responsibility for the family. Ramkumar left for Calcutta to provide for the family, and Gadadhar, back in his village, began conducting regular worship of their family deity, which his brother had previously managed. He was profoundly religious and performed pujas with fervour. In the meantime, his older brother had founded a school in Calcutta to teach Sanskrit and served as a priest at various socio-religious events.

Ramakrishna Paramahansa Works

The celebrated mystic Ramakrishna was born in Calcutta in 1855 to Queen Rani Rashmoni, who founded the Kali temple at Dakshineshwar. He identified as a Shakto, but he was receptive to worshipping the divine through a variety of spiritual practises. He studied under numerous Gurus and learned tantric techniques from Bhairavi Brahmani, accomplishing all 64 tantric sadhanas and gaining knowledge of Kundalini Yoga.

In 1864, Ramakrishna converted to the Vaishnav faith while studying under Guru Jatadhari. ‘Batshalya Bhava’ and ‘Madhura Bhava’ are fundamental tenets of the Vaishav religion. He travelled to Nadia and had a vision of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu merging with his body.

Monk Totapuri initiated Ramakrishna into Sanyaas, the formal life of an ascetic, in 1865. He was instructed in Advaita Vedanta, Hindu philosophies concerning the non-dualism of the spirit, and the significance of Brahman. In the years that followed, he practised Islam and had a vision of a man with a brilliant white beard.

Sri Ramakrishna was a revivifying influence, revivifying Hinduism in nineteenth-century Bengal and influencing other religions, such as Brahmoism. He did not distinguish between devotees on the basis of caste and embraced sceptics with his simple charisma and selfless love. Other religions, such as Brahmoism, were compelled to reevaluate their beliefs due to the influence of his teachings.

Personal Life

In 1859, at the age of twenty-three, Ramakrishna married Saradamoni Mukhopadhyay, a five-year-old from a neighbouring village. The couple remained apart until Saradamoni turned eighteen, at which point she joined her spouse in Dakshineshwar. Ramakrishna proclaimed her to be the embodiment of the Divine Mother and conducted the Shodashi Puja with her in Goddess Kali’s seat. She readily assumed the role of mother to her husband’s disciples as an ardent devotee of his philosophies.
