S. Janaki Biography: Sistla Janaki is an Andhra Pradesh-born playback vocalist and occasional composer. She is referred to with respect as “Janaki Amma” and South India’s Nightingale. She is one of India’s most renowned playback vocalists. In Karnataka, she is known as ‘Gaana Kogile’ (Singing Cuckoo), while in Tamil Nadu, she is known as ‘Isaikkuyil’.

Early Years

Janaki was born on April 23 in Guntur, Madras Presidency, British India (now Andhra Pradesh), Pallapatla, Repalle Taluka. Her father, Sreeramamurthy Sistla, was a physician and instructor of Ayurveda. She spent the majority of her adolescence in Sircilla, where she made her stage debut at the age of nine. She learned the fundamentals of music from Paidiswamy, a Nadaswaram Vidwan. Janaki never pursued formal training in classical music, however.

Janaki wedded V. Ramprasad in 1959. He supported her career and was present for the majority of her recordings. In 1997, he died of cardiac arrest. His wife Uma Muralikrishna is a Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dancer. Their only son, Murali Krishna, resides in Hyderabad.

Janakamma’s native language is Telugu, but she is also fluent in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi.

Career

In 1957, she made her debut as a playback vocalist in the Tamil film Vidhiyin Vilayattu. She subsequently acted in the Telugu film M.L.A. In her first year, she sang film tunes in six languages. She chose the Malayalam lullaby “Amma Poovinum” from 10 Kalpanakal as the last song of her 60-year singing career and retired on October 28, 2017, with a concert in Mysuru.

Unfortunately, Ramprasad passed away in 1997, and Janaki made the decision to avoid donning coloured sarees and sarees with golden borders of her own volition.

Janakiamma announced her retirement from singing in films, television programmes, and other events in 2016. Janaki reversed her decision to retire in order to sing the song ‘Un Usuru Kaathula’ for the 2018 film ‘Pannadi’, following repeated requests from the film community.
