Simone Biles Biography: Age, Height, Net Worth, Personal Life and Early Years

Sam Curran Career

He literally has cricket in his veins. Sam Curran, whose grandfather was a First Class cricketer for Rhodesia and whose father was a national cricketer for Zimbabwe, is one of the many white African cricketers of this decade who has left his traditional roots and relocated to the United Kingdom to pursue his career.

A diminutive, gentle-appearing left-arm seamer whose natural angle allows him to swing the Dukes away from right-handers, he doubles as a capable batsman lower down the order; and given the comfort with which he appears with the bat in hand, it may soon become his primary skill.

While his brother Tom Curran became predominantly a limited-overs bowler, Sam Curran followed a more traditional path. In his youth, he was hailed as a prodigy and rose quickly through Zimbabwe’s under-13 ranks and Surrey’s age-division cricket, becoming the second youngest player to make his FC debut for Surrey at 17 years and 40 days, immediately impressing with a five-wicket haul against Kent.

Soon after, he was selected for the 2016 under-19 World Cup and the England Lions’ mission to the UAE later that year. Sam received his first Test cap against Pakistan at Headingley in June 2018 due to an injury to Ben Stokes.

His greatest moment under the sun occurred in the summer of 2018 at home against India, the then-number one team in the world. Although he was selected predominantly as a bowler, it was his ability to bat at number eight that helped England recover from middle-order collapses in match after match. It came as no surprise when he was named the Series’ Most Valuable Player for his all-around performance (272 runs and 11 wickets) in England’s 4-1 victory. He maintained his form throughout the Sri Lankan tour, playing a crucial role in England’s clean sweep of the islanders.

In the subsequent months, however, his red ball performance deteriorated, with mediocre returns on his excursions to New Zealand and South Africa. Curran was sidelined for a significant portion of 2021 due to a back injury, which caused him to miss the T20 World Cup and that season’s IPL.

Sam Curran’s white ball form, however, was on a different trajectory, as he rose to prominence with a Man of the Match performance in India, where he scored 95* in an ODI and nearly chased down a massive target of 329 from an improbable position. Shortly after that series, Curran recorded his first five-wicket ODI performance against Sri Lanka. Sam Curran then experienced his pinnacle moment in limited overs cricket during the 2022 T20I World Cup. In that tournament, he was given a new role as a death overs bowler and performed magnificently. Curran began the World Cup with a five-wicket performance against Afghanistan and concluded it with a Man of the Match 3/12 against Pakistan in the final, which helped England win the trophy. He was dubbed Player of the Tournament for taking 13 wickets at an average of 11.38 during the tournament.

Since that World Cup, Curran’s form has declined slightly, as evidenced by his lackluster performances in South Africa and Bangladesh. Despite this, he remains a mainstay of the English white ball team, having vastly improved his bowling and being a useful batsman in the lower order as well.

IPL  Career

Sam Curran’s Man of the Series performance against India in the 2018 Test series came at the perfect moment, as teams stretched their budgets to acquire his services for the 2019 season. Curran, despite being a comparatively unknown commodity in T20 cricket, was acquired by Punjab Kings for a high price. His first season in the IPL was unremarkable, as the lack of swing on flat Indian pitches made him relish basting the batters. Curran’s economy suffered greatly during that season, but he still managed a respectable return on wickets, including a hat-trick against Delhi Capitals that turned the game in his team’s favor. On occasion, Curran was used as a top-order pinch hitter and tallied a fifty.

Curran was released by Punjab Kings and signed by Chennai Super Kings for the subsequent season. He was the shining light for a Chennai team that significantly underperformed in the 2020 IPL in the United Arab Emirates, and he contributed adequately with the bat and the ball. Curran maintained his excellent form during the 2021 season, despite CSK’s withdrawal from the UAE phase of the competition due to a back injury. The left-arm bowler sat out the 2022 IPL, and when he registered for the next auction following a very successful T20 World Cup, he was reunited with Punjab Kings and became the most expensive player in IPL history.
