Shreegauri Sawant Early Life and History
Advocate for transgender rights, Gauri Sawant. Sawant, who was born in Pune, has always manifested characteristics considered to be feminine. She concealed her true identity. Then, one day, she decided to abandon her assigned-at-birth identity and alter herself to match it. She chose the name Gauri Sawant as a result. As her father was a police officer, Sawant’s household was already patriarchal. Her mother never intended for her to exist in this universe. In an interview with YourStory, Sawant stated, “She (mother) did not want me to be born and even sought an abortion in the seventh month.” She fled her home when she was 14 or 15 because she didn’t want to disappoint her father.

Sawant adopted a girl whose biological mother was a prostitute in 2001. The young woman lost her fight against HIV. Later, she rescued and adopted a five-year-old girl who was being trafficked into servitude. In 2017, Vicks documented her voyage that demonstrated love, a sense of family, and care that transcends all gender and class norms.
