Venu Nagavally Early years
Venu Nagavally was born on April 16, 1949, to renowned playwrights Nagavally R. S. Kurup and Rajamma. His siblings are Ramachandran, Vasundhara, and Lalithambika. He attended Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram, and University College, Trivandrum, for his education. He possessed a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and a Diploma in Journalism. On September 9, 2010, Venu Nagavally passed away at the KIMS hospital in Thiruvananthapuram owing to liver cirrhosis. He died at the age of 61 and was cremated the same day at the Santhikavadam crematorium with full state honours. His descendants are his wife Meera and son Vivek.
Venu Nagavally Career
Venu began his career in Akashvani as an announcer. Later, he sang a melody in the 1976 film Chottanikkara Amma, but he was not recognised until 1978, when he acted in the 1979 film Ulkkadal, directed by K. G. George, launching his acting career. Shalini Ente Koottukari, Meenamasathile Sooryan, Pakshe, and Chillu are some of the notable films in which he has acted.
The first film directed by Venu was Sukhamo Devi (1986), which he characterises as his own tragic love story. Later, he directed the blockbuster films Lal Salam, Aey Auto, Aayirappara, and Rakthasaakshikal Zindabad, among others. Lal Salaam and Rakthasaakshikal Zindabad were centred on the lives of Kerala’s first Communist leaders. In the late 1980s, his directorial efforts “Sughamo devi,” “Sarvakalashala,” “Aey Auto,” and “Lal Salam” cemented Mohanlal’s status as a superstar. Venu has also written scripts for several films, including the blockbuster film Kilukkam, which was directed by Priyadarshan. His first film as a screenwriter was titled Ee Ganam Marakkumo.
In addition to acting in films like Meenamasathile Sooryan (about the Kayyur revolt) and heading the production wing of a pro-left television channel, two of the films he directed – Lal Salam (1990) and Raksthasakhikal Zindabad (1998) – were introspective examinations of the rise and fall of communist ideals.
