Victor Cruz Biography: Victor Michael Cruz was born in Paterson, New Jersey, on November 11, 1988. Mother is Puerto Rican, and father Mike Walker was an African American firefighter. Additionally, he is the sibling of Andrea, Ebony, and Malik. At Paterson Catholic High School, he participated in athletic competitions as a wide receiver and defensive back. Cruz ascribes his accomplishments to his mentor, Andrew Slome. Cruz was named to the All-State team with 19 touchdown receptions on 42 passes, contributing to his team’s unblemished record. He subsequently attended the all-male college preparatory Bridgton Academy. During his one-season tenure, he amassed 47 receptions for 869 yards and eight touchdowns.

Although Cruz enrolled at the University of Massachusetts, juggling athletics and academics proved to be a challenge. Due to his low academic performance, he was ineligible to participate in university football until 2007. His grades suffered significantly. Cruz, despite not making his UMass football team debut until his third year, ranked fourth among all UMass receivers with 131 catches. He ultimately succeeded in maintaining both his academic standing and his football career. Cruz earned a degree in Afro-American Studies upon graduation. In 2008 and 2009, he was selected to the first team of the Colonial Athletic Association wide receivers.

Six passes were received in his debut preseason contest for 145 yards and three touchdowns. Cruz appeared in the first three games of the season prior to missing time due to an injury. Six years were spent with the Giants prior to his release. He signed with the Chicago Bears in 2017 before being released the same year. Cruz, in contrast to rumors that he might return to the Giants, declared his retirement in 2018.

Victor Cruz Early Life

Victor Michael Cruz was born in Paterson, New Jersey, on November 11, 1986. Michael Walker, an African-American, and Blanca Cruz, a Puerto Rican, are his parents. Michael, who served in the fire department, tragically took his own life when Victor was in his early twenties. Following his graduation from Paterson Catholic High School, Cruz attended Bridgton Academy, a Maine college preparatory institution, for one semester. He played wide receiver and defensive back for the Paterson football team. He was named to the All-State team during his senior year, and the squad went undefeated and captured the New Jersey Parochial Group I championship. Victor recorded 19 touchdowns and caught over 40 passes during that season.

Victor Cruz College Career

Cruz initially struggled to balance his academic and football obligations, and the University of Massachusetts twice sent him home for academic reasons. After attaining eligibility to compete for the university in 2007, he graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Afro-American Studies. In addition to accumulating nearly 2,000 receiving yards and eleven touchdowns throughout his collegiate career, Victor was named a first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association wide receiver in both 2008 and 2009.

Victor Cruz Professional Profession

Despite remaining undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft, Cruz was subsequently hired by the New York Giants the following day. He assisted the New York Jets in a 31-16 preseason victory over the Giants in August 2010 by accumulating three touchdowns. Victor, who accumulated 297 receiving yards to lead the league at the conclusion of the preseason, was selected to the Giants’ regular season roster. Cruz sustained a hamstring injury in his first three games of the season and was subsequently placed on injured reserve for the remainder of 2010. Following the departure of Steve Smith, Victor was promoted to the position of fourth wide receiver for the Giants. In week 16 of the 2011 season, Cruz tied an NFL record with a 99-yard touchdown reception. During that contest, he also surpassed Amani Toomer, who had previously held the team record for most receiving yards in a single season. An Associated Press Second-Team All-Pro, Victor accumulated 1,536 receiving yards, nine touchdowns, and 82 receptions in the course of the season. A 20–17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship propelled the Giants to the Super Bowl. The team defeated the New England Patriots by a score of 21–17 in Super Bowl XLVI.

Following the signing of a $2.879 million, one-year restricted free agent tender in June 2013, Cruz extended his contract by $45.879 million over the course of five years in July 2013. In a contest against the Philadelphia Eagles in October 2014, he suffered a torn patellar tendon and was subsequently sidelined for the remainder of the season. Following surgery on his left calf, Victor was subsequently sidelined for the 2015 season. The team placed him on season-ending injured reserve in November 2015. After two years of rehabilitation, he rejoined the Giants in September 2016 and scored the game-winning touchdown in the team’s season-opening contest against the Dallas Cowboys. Cruz was fined over $12,000 later that month for excessive revelry following a dance in the endzone he and Odell Beckham Jr. engaged in. The Giants released him in February 2017, and he remained a free agent for the majority of the 2017 season prior to announcing his retirement on August 21, 2018.

Following the devastating December 2014 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Cruz paid tribute to the six-year-old victim, Jack Pinto. Victor paid homage to Jack by inscribing “Jack Pinto My Hero” and “R.I.P. Jack Pinto” on his shoes prior to a game against the Atlanta Falcons. Cruz surprised Pinto’s bereaved family a few days after the tragedy by delivering the gloves and cleats he had donned during that game to Jack’s sibling.
