Fichtner was born in Cheektowaga, New York, and raised on Long Island. He graduated from Maryvale High School in 1974 and subsequently attended Farmingdale State College, where he earned an associate degree in criminal justice in 1976. In 1978, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brockport State University of New York College. Fichtner then attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.
