Westfield, Alabama is the place of birth for Willie Howard Mays. He comes from African-American stock. Both of his parents were athletes; William Howard Mays and Annie Satterwhite. His father was his sole carer because his parents never wed. His father had played baseball professionally and had taught him the game. Mays looked up to New York Yankees slugger Joe DiMaggio when he was a kid.

After graduating from high school, Mays began his professional baseball career with the Birmingham Black Barons. The principal threatened to suspend him because of the disruption to his education that his frequent travel for games would cause. The Black Barons eventually restricted him to playing solely in home games. In 1950, the New York Giants beat out the competition and signed him because of his exceptional talent. He was sent to the minors and eventually promoted to the big club in 1950.

He was thrust into the starting lineup in 1951 and was so successful that he was named the team’s rookie of the year. He was drafted by the army after his second season, and he spent the next two years stationed at a military installation. In 1954, when Mays had rejoined the team, they won the National League title and he was awarded the league’s most valuable player. From 1954 to 1973, he participated in 24 all-star games. In the 1972–1973 season, he played for the New York Mets before calling it quits. With his ridiculously impressive baseball numbers, Mays became a household name.
