Wilson’s football prowess was evident when he attended Draper’s Corner Canyon High School as an adolescent. In his senior season, he threw for 2,986 yards and 24 touchdowns, scored eight times, and rushed for 756 yards. Wilson had planned to attend Boise State University and play quarterback for the Broncos, but he ultimately enrolled at Brigham Young University (BYU). He was a member of the B.Y.U Cougars football team from 2018 to 2020.
During his freshman year at BYU, Wilson started seven of the nine games he participated in. In his first game for BYU against Hawaii, he made history as the youngest quarterback to ever start for the programme. Wilson was named the 2018 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Most Valuable Player after completing all 18 of his passes for 317 yards and four touchdowns in a 49–18 victory over Western Michigan. Wilson also earned BYU’s Most Valuable Player award in 2019 as a sophomore. He completed 199 of 319 passes for 2,382 yards, including nine interceptions and eleven touchdowns, while starting nine games. A year later, he was the offensive Most Valuable Player of the 2020 Boca Raton Bowl and the recipient of the 2020 Polynesian College Football “Player of the Year” Award, which he shared with U.S.C. safety Talanoa Hufanga. He started 12 games, completed 247 of 336 passes for 3,692 yards, and scored 33 touchdowns during this season. In addition to his three interceptions, he rushed for 255 yards and scored 10 touchdowns.
On July 29, 2021, Wilson made his professional debut after signing a four-year contract with the New York Jets. He was the second quarterback selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draught, out of five quarterbacks. The agreement included a fifth-year option, a $22.9 million bonus, and a fully guaranteed $35.15 million. In week four, the victory over the Tennessee Titans was his first in the NFL. Wilson incurred a knee injury after a hit from Matthew Judon of the New England Patriots in week seven and was forced to miss the next four games. In week 12, he returned, defeated Houston, Texas, and won his first road game.
