AAUW International Fellowship 2024/2025 for Women in the USA: Eligibility requirements

Former recipients of any AAUW national fellowship or grant (excluding branch or local awards and Community Action Grants) are ineligible for International Fellowships.

AAUW’s board of directors, committees, panels, task forces, and staff, including current trainees, are ineligible to apply for fellowships and grants. A current award holder is eligible for election or appointment to boards, committees, commissions, and task forces.

International Fellowships are available to women, including those who identify as women, in any field of study at an accredited institution of higher education or in research for postdoctoral fellows. AAUW will make the ultimate determination regarding which institutions are eligible.

Applicants who were unsuccessful may reapply.

To qualify for an International Fellowship, candidates must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Possess citizenship in a country other than the United States or a nonimmigrant visa if living in the United States. Women who are currently U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or dual citizens of the U.S. and another country, or who expect to be during the fellowship year, are not eligible.

Applicants who intend to take one of the accepted English proficiency exams should schedule and take the examination as soon as feasible. Please direct any queries regarding the tests to the test administrator.
  • Master’s/first professional degree and doctoral applicants must have applied to an accredited institution of study for the fellowship year by the AAUW application deadline and must specify the name of the institution on the International Fellowship application. Although acceptance is not required at the time of application, scholars must include official institution confirmation with their award acceptance materials.
  • Master’s/first professional degree fellowships are designed for programmes leading to a master’s or professional degree, such as J.D., M.F.A., L.L.M., M.Arch., or medical degrees such as M.D., D.D.S., etc. Ineligible are certificates, associate degrees, and bachelor’s degrees.

  • Graduate Women International members are eligible for a limited number of grants for study or research in any country other than their own. Foreign affiliates of U.S. institutions are considered to be located outside the United States.
  • Applicants may apply for the fellowship during any year of their programme, but they must be engaged in a complete academic or research year. International Fellowships do not support a partial academic or research year. Ineligible are programmes ending prior to April of the fellowship year.
  • Master’s/first professional degree and doctoral fellowships support traditional classroom-based courses of study in universities and colleges. This fellowship programme does not provide funding for distance-learning or online programmes, as well as degrees that rely significantly on distance-learning components.
