Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) resounded with the spirit of liberty as the institution celebrated the 77th Independence Day of India with unwavering enthusiasm and splendor. The event was marked by the vice chancellor’s insightful speech and a profound sense of unity among teachers, students, and staff.
Prof. Mohammad Gulrez, AMU Vice Chancellor, addressed a diverse crowd at Strachey Hall and, after raising the national flag, delivered an inspiring message about the substance of freedom. True freedom, he emphasized, extends beyond the absence of foreign rule; it resides in our cognizant awareness of our civic roles and responsibilities. Prof. Gulrez highlighted the transformative vision of AMU’s founder, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, who sought to establish an institution based on logic, scientific discipline, and societal advancement.
Reflecting on the historical significance of AMU, Professor Gulrez emphasized the institution’s pivotal position in shaping India’s consciousness during its independence struggle. In addition to generating freedom fighters, the university also fostered the intellectual foundation that contributed to the nation’s emancipation.
The Vice Chancellor urged the AMU community to embrace the values that unite the Indian nation: justice, liberty, equality, and brotherhood. As pillars of unity, he emphasized the significance of preserving democratic values, individual liberty, and collective responsibility. He lauded India’s remarkable development in the 76 years since its independence, citing the country’s promising position in the global economy and its progress in numerous sectors.
Prof. Gulrez praised the government’s initiatives, such as Skill India, Digital India, and the National Health Mission, which demonstrate a commitment to comprehensive development. India’s participation in international forums such as IBSA, BRICS, Quad, and ASEAN, as well as its presidency of the G20 summit, were cited as indicators of India’s expanding importance and cultural heritage on the international stage.
Prof. Gulrez announced the successful implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, introducing innovative programs aimed at employability, entrepreneurship, and skill enhancement, while drawing attention to AMU’s own development. He lauded AMU’s accomplishments in the NAAC and NIRF rankings, praising the institution’s dedication to providing quality education.
The Vice Chancellor advocated for the transformation of AMU into the nation’s first Green University, in accordance with global environmental responsibilities. He asserted that AMU is not only an educational institution, but also a beacon of optimism that fosters ideas and aspirations for a better future. AMU Registrar Mr. Mohammad Imran (IPS) presided over the proceedings.
Prof. Gulrez and Mr. Imran participated in environmental initiatives as part of the day’s festivities, planting trees and distributing produce to students admitted to University Health Centre.
In his concluding remarks, Professor Gulrez urged the university’s faculty to provide a comprehensive, value-centered education that meets global standards and substantially contributes to nation-building. He acknowledged the upcoming challenges with optimism and expressed pride in working with a dedicated faculty team.
The Vice Chancellor also inaugurated the G20 Selfie Point at Duck Point on the University Campus, a collaboration between the Cultural Education Centre and the Building Department. The G20 Selfi Point highlighted international cooperation, while an exhibition of photographs of AMU freedom fighters introduced young people to the nation’s rich history.
The Department of Urdu organized a Mushaira, a poetic gathering that mirrored the sentiments of liberty and unity. Prof. Gulrez presided over the ceremony and reiterated AMU’s dedication to cultural and linguistic diversity. Prof. Q. H. Faridi, Chairman of the Department, extended a warm welcome to the poets and guests, while Prof. S. Siraj Ajmali presided over the Mushaira proceedings.
